PROFILE OF FOUNDER ROBERT C. SMITH
-----------------------------------------------------------

Robert C. Smith was born in 1923 and was a life-long resident of Norwich, New York. He attended St. Paul's Catholic School and graduated from Norwich High School. He entered the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of corporal. After his military service, he went to business school in Rochester, New York (McKechnie-Lunger School of Commerce, known today as Rochester Institute of Technology School of Business). Robert began a life-long career with Victory Markets, the predecessor to the Great American Food Store chain based in Norwich, New York. He was very involved in his community and served many years as a Residential Chairman of the Community Chest, now known as The United Way.

Robert was a dedicated and loyal member of St Paul's Catholic Church. He was a kind, simple and gentle man. He loved God, his family and his church, all of whom he served with a generous heart and gracious smile.

Prior to his death at age 84, Robert established the Robert C. Smith Foundation. During his working career he had made many fortunate investment decisions which allowed him to create this foundation. The foundation's purpose is to assist in the maintenance of charitable and religious organizations to benefit the people of Chenango County.
